в многочисленных отечественных и зарубежных исследованиях [2; 3; 13;
психологом и классными руководителями образовательного учреждения (ОУ);

Abstract
The article presents the results of the study of psychosocial individual
personality characteristics of mothers and their adolescent children
with delinquent and socially adapted behavior. The purpose of the study
was to identify the psychological characteristics of mothers of
adolescents with delinquent behavior. We have used clinical psychological,
experimental psychological and mathematical statistical methods. Clinical
and psychological method included a study of socio-psychological and
medical information: individual interviews with psychologists, social
teachers, class teachers, medical workers of educational institutions
and specially designed semi-structured interview. Experimental
psychological method was presented by a set of psychometric tests:
method of studying neuropsychological instability and accentuations
of personality traits (NPI-A), «Integrative anxiety test» (ITT)
"The level of subjective control" (LSC), "Personal differential" (PD),
"Adolescents about parents" (AaP), as well as modified by the author
experimental technique "Joint drawing for mothers and their teenage
child".
This publication provides quantitative data obtained by comparison of
the results of complex psychological study, reflecting the tendency
of intergenerational reproducibility of behavioral patterns in
the studied families.
Analysis of complex psychological research social psychological and
personality characteristics of mothers and their children and
adolescents have revealed a number of similar psychosocial and
individual personality characteristics in the studied groups of mothers
and their delinquent adolescents. For example, discovered the following
trends: lack of positive attitude to socially-approved activities,
a greater propensity to use tobacco and alcohol in adolescents with
delinquent behavior and their mothers; lack of trust, understanding,
positive participation and support from the mothers who raised them.
The results obtained in the study indicate the existence of such
relations as in society in General and house in particular. This can
detect changes between generations reproducibility of the destructive
patterns of functioning in families of delinquent adolescents.
Key words: delinquency; psychosocial characteristics; relation
to own health; perception of mother's personality; nervous and mental
instability.

Introduction
Juvenile delinquency is one of the most pressing issues of society.
The number of Russian children involved in a criminal life is unacceptably
large [12; 18; 21]. The data of the Ministry of Internal Affairs
published in the website of the Federal Service of State Statistics
[22] show that there were 67.2 thousands of registered crimes in 2013
performed by minors, which constitutes 1.2% of the total number of
this age group. However, real indices are several times higher because
there is a high level of latency in juvenile delinquency [6].
In the context of studying delinquent behavior of adolescents,
psychological studies are traditionally engaged in studying a family,
though mostly from the viewpoint of its influence on a juvenile
delinquent [9; 12; 15; 27; 31; 35; 41; 43]. The parents of an
adolescent with delinquent behavior act as an independent object of
study in case of considering interfamilial crimes (a murder or serious
bodily assault in a family). In other cases (the formation of selfish
or violent-aggressive behavior in adolescents, recidivism), a family
and family relationships are treated in studies as key factors in the
formation of juvenile delinquency [8; 9; 20; 23; 29; 34; 37; 42].
A theoretical analysis of the studies devoted to parents of delinquent
adolescents has enabled to reveal the following clinical-psychological
peculiarities, which make family upbringing pathologic: alcoholization,
aggression and violence, and inter-generational reproducibility of the
destructive patterns of family functioning [15; 20; 21; 25; 26; 32; 39;
40].
Alcoholization of parents of delinquent adolescents is a subject
of an interdisciplinary study of psychology, medicine, criminology.
Alcoholism contributes to the degradation of family members, weakens
mutual understanding and parental control, and reduces parental
authority [17; 21; 25; 30; 34]. Nowadays, the issue of parental
alcogolization in Russia is accompanied by the issue of the drugs
consumption of the parents of adolescents including "heavy" synthetic
drugs. If such facts are revealed, the situation is qualified as
threatening to life and health of a child and passes to the competence
of law enforcement bodies.
Many domestic and foreign studies report a high level of aggression,
domestic violence, and physical punishments in a parental family of
delinquent adolescents [2; 3; 13; 19; 23; 25; 26; 31; 38; 40]. G.I.
Klimantova [13] reports that 42.2% of delinquent adolescents suffered
from harsh treatment and torments, and were beaten by parents; 30.4%
suffered from sexual abuse by relatives.
K. Bartol [2, p. 50] concludes that "physical punishment gives a
model to follow to a child, which will be reproduced when a grown child
will himself experience irritation and discontent". Such position agrees
with N.V. Vostroknutov’s assumption [7] that the formation of
non-pathological delinquent behavior of children is defined by the fact
of early desocialization (family deprivation, harsh treatment, and
violence) and indirect desocializing influence of a family (a rigid
type of miseducation). The formation of pathological delinquent
behavior is based on deprivational and conflictive-stressful processes
and a mechanism of identification with the fixation of stereotypes of
parents’ asocial behavior. A forcedly desocializing family is
a family with obvious improper behavior. D.A. Shestakov [25]
reports that the parents of future delinquents were themselves charged
with criminal offences earlier, moreover, over 50% — for crimes
of violence. Besides, the studies of delinquents whose parents were
criminals too show the coincidence of behavior models in parents and
children [23].
Analyzing educational tendencies of parents of juvenile delinquents,
M. Ratter [19, p. 219] writes, "A number of studies show that
parents who use physical methods of punishing their children often come
from troubled families and suffered from the cruelty of their parents
in childhood. Sometimes, physical punishment of children can be
practiced in the family during several generations". L. Eron’s
study shows that a vicious circle of violence is reproduced at least
throughout three generations in families prone to aggression [2].
A.A. Akhmatov [1] denotes a tendency to enhancing interfamilial
delinquent behavior in our country.
The results of above-mentioned studies overlap with the conception
of genetic factors of delinquency. A.V. Chernikov [24] emphasizes
that such symptomatic patterns of family functioning as alcoholism,
incest, violence, and suicide have a tendency to be repeated from
generation to generation and call them "family programs".
A.I. Zakharov [11] reported that psychologically traumatic
experience of interpersonal relationships going through several
generations is a main pathogenic factor in family. R. Retzlaff [36]
assumes that it is possible to understand the impairments of behavior
in adolescents only in the context of a system of destructive patterns
reproduced in a family. The studies of domestic scientists report that
the parents of half of the juvenile delinquents were subjected to
various measures of criminal punishment [8].
Besides, all the studies of juvenile delinquents pay attention to
the fact that adolescents with delinquent behavior are in most cases
brought up by a sole parent, mostly by a mother [2; 3; 6; 10; 14; 19;
20; 25; 28; 33].
Thus, a comparative study aimed at studying individual-psychological
peculiarities of mothers with adolescent children with delinquent and
socially adapted behavior is relevant.
The goal of this study has been to reveal psychological
peculiarities of mothers of adolescents with delinquent behavior.
This goal has been realized by solving some tasks including
the comparative analysis of psychosocial and psychological characteristics
of mothers with adolescent children with delinquent and socially
adapted behavior, frequency of various somatic pathology in them, the
specifics of the style of maternal education and its relation with
psychological peculiarities of the women under examination; revealing
the peculiarities of interaction between a mother and a child in common
activities in the juxtaposed groups; evaluation of prognostic
informativeness of particular individual-psychological characteristics
of mothers of adolescents with regard to the probability of their
further delinquency using methods of mathematical statistics;
elaborating practical recommendations on a psychoprophylactic work with
families of delinquent adolescents.
Materials and methods
To solve these tasks, we have been examined 152 mothers of senior
high school students (8—11 forms) of six municipal budgetary
educational establishments of Norilsk, the Krasnoyarsk Region, and
their adolescent children from August 2009 to May 2011. The mean age
of the respondents is comparable: the age of mothers of adolescents
with delinquent behavior is 38.1, mothers of adolescents with
normative behavior — 37.9; the age of their children is 15.0
and 15.1 respectively.
To standardize the conditions of the study, all the examinations of
mothers and their adolescent children have been carried out in the
office of a pedagogue-psychologist of an educational establishment. All
the respondents have given oral informed consent for psychological
study.
All the mothers and their adolescent children have been subdivided
into 2 groups by the criterion of presence/absence of delinquent
behavior of these adolescents. The senior high school students have
been subdivided into groups by experts. The experts have been
represented by social pedagogues and form masters of the above-mentioned
educational establishments, as well as by truant inspectors supervising
these educational establishments. An adolescent was assigned to the
delinquent group if he was registered in the commission on juvenile
affairs for his delinquencies at the period of study. Delinquencies
involved violence, scuffles with peers, ragging, petty thefts,
aggressive behavior in public places, extortion of money, robberies, as
well as their combination with missing lessons without good excuse and
drinking alcohol. An adolescent was assigned to the group of socially
adapted adolescents with normative behavior if he had an adequate
behavior, could satisfy his needs without conflicts and productively,
and to interact efficiently and constructively with other people.
To realize the goals and tasks of the study, we have used
clinical-psychological, experimental-psychological and
mathematical-statistic methods. Clinical-psychological method involves
the study of medical and social-psychological information: individual
interviews with psychologists, social pedagogues, form masters, medical
workers of educational establishments and a specially elaborated
half-structured interview, which has enabled to describe a somatic and
social-psychological status of the women and their adolescent children
with delinquent and normative behavior under examination. We have
studied socio-demographic characteristics of women and adolescents and
specifics of their lifestyle in the juxtaposed groups including family
relations (including a grand parental family), labor (study)
activities, specifics of leisure, state of health, consuming tobacco,
alcohol and substances; respondents characterized the zones of the
biggest frustration with their psychosocial status. The questions to a
mother about the specifics of early development of an adolescent under
examination and current relations with him have been included into a
separate block. We have also studied social-pedagogical information:
social passports of families, databanks of children and adolescents
registered in the juvenile affairs groups, and a databank of families
in a socially dangerous situation. The author’s interview
contains 75 points in total.
Experimental-psychological method is represented by a set of
psychometric procedures: a technique of studying neuro-psychic
instability and accentuations (NPI-А), "Integrative Test of Anxiety"
(ITA), "Level of Subjective Control" (LSC), "Personal Differential"
(PD), "Adolescents about Parents" (AaP), and an experimental technique
"Joint Drawing of a Mother and her Adolescent Child" modified by
the author.
The mathematical-statistical method of data processing has been
carried out by means of the statistical program pocket SPSS.
Basic stages of study: 1) interviews with a social pedagogue,
a psychologist and form masters of an educational establishment (EE);
2) an interview with a medical worker of an EE; 3) an
individual interview and a psychological study of an adolescent;
4) an individual interview and a psychological study of a mother;
5) joint drawing by a mother and an adolescent.
The analysis of the results has enabled to reveal similar indices
by some psychosocial and personal characteristics of mothers and their
adolescent children under examination. Hence, this publication
represents the data obtained during the juxtaposition of a part of
the results of a complex psychological study reflecting a tendency
of inter-generational reproducibility of behavior patterns in the
families under study.
Results of study
We have studied psychosocial characteristics of mothers and their
adolescent children with delinquent and normative behavior using a
half-structured clinical-psychological interview.
Table 1 shows the comparative indices reflecting the juxtaposed
characteristics of current life conditions of mothers and their
adolescent children with delinquent and normative behavior.
Table 1
Social-psychological characteristics reflecting current life
conditions of mothers and their adolescent children with
delinquent and normative behavior
As shown in table 1, the attitude to socially approved activities
(work for mothers and study for adolescents) in the group of mothers
and their adolescent children with delinquent behavior is worse than
in the juxtaposed groups. 26.3% of mothers say they are not satisfied
with their employment and 51.3% of their adolescent children with
delinquent behavior say they do not like studying. There have been
no such answers in the juxtaposed groups. Besides, 68.4% of mothers
and 68.4% of their children — delinquent adolescents have no
hobbies. Such indices may refer to inability and unwillingness of
both mothers and their adolescent children with delinquent behavior
to realize one’s activity in socially desirable and socially
acceptable forms of behavior.
11.8% of delinquent adolescents and 59.2% of their mothers are not
satisfied with their own life in varying degrees, which can contribute
to general emotional discomfort.
Table 2 shows the comparative characteristics reflecting the
attitude mothers and their adolescent children with delinquent and
normative behavior to their health.
Table 2
Characteristics reflecting the attitude mothers and their adolescent
children with delinquent and normative behavior to their health
As shown from table 2, mothers and their adolescent children with
delinquent behavior are more prone to consuming tobacco and alcohol
than mothers and their children with normative behavior. This refers
to the formation of a representation of possible consuming psychoactive
substances without damage to health in delinquent adolescents and to
early tastes of tobacco and alcohol, which has a negative influence of
the state of health and involves minors in administratively punishable
activities.
We have studied personal characteristics of mothers and their
adolescent children with delinquent and normative behavior using a set
of test techniques mentioned above. "Personal differential" technique
[16] has been used for studying the peculiarities of perceiving
one’s own personality, personality of a child and personality
of one’s own mother by women from the groups under comparison.
We have also studied the peculiarities of self-esteem of adolescents
with delinquent and normative behavior and their perception of
the personality of their mothers.
Table 3 represents the values of factors of "Personal Differential"
(PD) obtained during the study of adolescents with delinquent and
normative behavior in the evaluation of personality of their own mother.
Table 3
Comparison of mean values of PD factors reflecting the peculiarities
of the perception of personality of their own mother by adolescents
with delinquent and normative behavior
As shown in Table 3, there are statistic differences at a high
level of significance between the juxtaposed groups of adolescents
in their perception of personality of their own mother by the factor
of Evaluation and Activity of "Personal Differential". Adolescents
with delinquent behavior perceive their own mother as a less positive
and a less active personality (differences at a significant level)
than a mother perceived by adolescents with normative behavior.
No differences by the factor Strength have been revealed.
To make a differentiation by sex, we give the data of the
peculiarities of perceiving one’s own mother separately for
boys and girls. Table 4 represents the values of factors of "Personal
Differential (PD) obtained during the study of the perception of a
mother by adolescents with delinquent and normative behavior with their
separation by sex.
Table 4
Comparison of mean values of PD factors reflecting the peculiarities
of the perception of personality of their own mother by male and
female adolescents with delinquent and normative behavior
As shown in table 4, the groups differentiated by sex keep
group-wide tendencies to perceiving their mother, namely: both male
and female adolescents with delinquent behavior perceive their own
mother as a less positive and less active personality than a mother
perceived by adolescents with normative behavior. However, these
indices are more contrast in the female subgroup than in the male
subgroup.
During the collection of material, we have revealed cases when
adolescents with delinquent behavior from families registered in the
commission on juvenile affairs and protection of their rights as
families of a risk group give their mother maximal points by the scale
Evaluation when filling in "Personal Differential" describing a
personality of their mother. Hence, we have analyzed the differences
of mean indices of these factors by the Student t-criterion and
revealed the subgroups of families registered and non-registered in
the commission on juvenile affairs and protection of their rights in
the group of adolescents. However, we have revealed no significant
differences when analyzing the entire bulk of data.
To make a comparative analysis of the peculiarities of the perception
of personality of their own mother by adolescents with delinquent and
normative behavior and their mothers, we have studied the
representations of the personalities of their own mothers by the women
under examination. Table 5 represents the values of factors of
"Personal Differential (PD) obtained during the study of mothers of
adolescents with delinquent and normative behavior in their
evaluation of the personality of their own mother.
Table 5
Comparison of mean values of PD factors reflecting the peculiarities
of the perception of personality of their own mother by the mothers
of adolescents with delinquent and normative behavior
As shown in Table 5, there are statistic differences at a high
level of significance between the juxtaposed groups of women in their
perception of personality of their own mother by all the factors of
"Personal Differential". Mothers of adolescents with delinquent behavior
perceive their own mother as a less positive and a less active personality
(differences at a significant level) than mothers of adolescents with
normative behavior. We have found statistical differences by the factors
Evaluation and Activity in the juxtaposed groups of adolescents when
studying their perception of their mothers. This enables to make a
conclusion about the formation of an inter-generational tendency to a
negative perception of mothers in families with delinquent adolescents.
Discussion
The analysis of the complex psychological study of psychosocial and
personal characteristics of mothers and their adolescent children has
enabled to reveal some specific features including the tendencies of
inter-generational reproducibility of behavior patterns in the families
under examination.
The study of social-psychological characteristics of adolescents has
shown that delinquent adolescents have poorer performance and interest
in study, which, together with other factors, may refers to the
frustration of needs in achieving success in their learning activities.
Their mothers have reported the same tendency of missing positive
attitude to socially approved activity (work, hobby).
Delinquent adolescents reported the lack of trust, mutual
understanding, positive concern, and support from a mother more often
than in the juxtaposed group. This corresponds to the data given by
V.N. Kudryavtsev [15] who refers to the state of estrangement of
delinquents from their mothers occurring as early as in child age and
D.A. Shestakov [25] who writes about lack of good relations with a
mother in parental families of delinquents. Delinquent adolescents
educated in complete families report negative relations with a father
more often than socially adapted adolescents do. 81.8% of male
adolescents who have no father and are educated by stepfathers report
that the latter give them no support. These results of
clinical-psychological study show that most delinquent adolescents are
deprived of support from a parental family and have to look for it in
other social groups. The study of relationships between mothers of
adolescents with delinquent and normative behavior and their parental
families has shown that mothers of adolescents with delinquent
behavior, in comparison with the juxtaposed group, more often report
structural impairments in their parental families (59.2% and 25%
respectively; р<0.001), and impairments of interrelations with
parents caused by lack of psychological support (46.1% and 2.6%
respectively; р<0.001), and low degree of their positive concern
(34.2% and 0% respectively; р<0.001). This agrees with the data
about negative perception of mothers in the families of adolescents
with delinquent behavior obtained by the Personal Differential.
The study has revealed that mothers and their adolescent children
with delinquent behavior are more prone to smoking and drinking alcohol
in comparison with the juxtaposed groups. This agrees with the results
of domestic studies [25] reporting that the parents of half of the
delinquents are alcohol addicts. Parents with addiction to alcohol pay
less attention to the education of their children and lose the
qualities that are necessary in a family life: an interest to a child,
ability to care for him, sense of responsibility and reliability in
difficult life situations [4; 5; 17].
Besides, we have conducted the study of neural-psychic instability
and personal accentuations of mothers of adolescents with delinquent
behavior, which has shown very significant statistical differences by
all the juxtaposed scales of the NPI-А technique in comparison with the
indices of women from the control group, which can be interpreted as
their predisposition to neural-psychic breakdowns in the conditions of
mental or physical tension due to weak adaptation-compensatory
mechanisms.
Since there are no standardized normative indices for women aged
30—40 by the NPI-А technique, we have attempted to reveal particular
psychological characteristics of mothers of delinquent adolescents with
the greatest diagnostic significance by means of a multiple regression
analysis. The study has revealed that the indices "Neural-Psychic
Instability" and "Impulsiveness" play a key role. Neural-psychic
instability in mothers of delinquent adolescents possibly refers to
the reduction of their behavior regulation, impairment of interpersonal
relations, insufficient social maturity, impairments in the sphere of
professional activity and moral norms of behavior, lack of adequate
self-esteem and real perception of reality, low adaptive abilities.
The index of "impulsiveness" possibly refers to the manifestation of
such personal peculiarities as higher agitation, aggression,
explosiveness, obstinacy, low level of self-control, and unpredictable
emotions and actions in mother of adolescents with delinquent behavior.
Such combination of personal peculiarities of a mother makes her style
of education pathologic and forms destructive emotional environment in
family. We can compare these data with the results of study devoted to
the peculiarities of personal development of delinquent girls conducted
by E.G. Dozortseva [9]. She has revealed that hysteroid and
excitable personal radicals are the most criminogenic among personal
impairments of a clinical register in the structure of pathocharacterological
development. Therefore, we can assume that there is a genetic mechanism
of the formation of above-mentioned personal peculiarities in the families
of delinquent adolescents.
Conclusions
The analysis of the results of clinical-psychological and
experimental-psychological studies of mothers and their adolescent
children with delinquent and normative behavior has shown that there
are some individual-personal characteristics in the groups of mothers
and their delinquent adolescent children under study.
A comparative analysis of the peculiarities of the perception of
personality of their own mother by adolescents with delinquent and
normative behavior and their mothers has enabled to reveal a tendency
to inter-generational negative perception of mothers in the families of
adolescents with delinquent behavior, which opens new perspectives of
family psychotherapy and psychoprophylaxis. Mothers and their
adolescent children with delinquent behavior often have impairments of
both somatic and psychosocial components of the system of mental
adaptation, which conditions the necessity to give them complex
psychological-medical-social aid.
